Under our Noses

As a parent you might already hold this knowledge however if you are a parent like me (a mom who thought she had a great grip on parental knowledge but clearly didn’t) then please read on 🙂

THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THIS CRAZEE MOM !!

As a parent, I try to ensure I know everything that’s going on in my kids’ lives.  With 3 already successfully into adulthood, I assumed (my first mistake right?!) 😉 that as a parent there was nothing left I had to know before our last baby entered high school.  Especially about bullying.  I knew everything already right?!  I had already done it right?!  I have this ‘parental knowledge’ thing down pat right?!  I have a great relationship with my kids so they tell me everything right?!

WRONG !!!

Oh so wrong.  My grade?

Let’s (again) start with .. As a parent  … I have super parental supervision skills on Facebook.  However because I don’t use apps such as Instagram, SnapChat etc … I was unaware of the extent of cyberbullying among kids/teens and even adults or how many underaged children fall prey to online predators.  Just to clarify my opinion (which is only MY opinion) and as a parent, my opinion is ‘predators come in all types, shapes snd sizes’ so if you are an online bully then you are also an online predator.

Bullying has been around for probably ever, however technology has created a wider platform for this behaviour in this generation; our children’s generation; a generation of cyberbullies, a generation of online predators.  The term Stranger Danger has enveloped a whole new meaning as it has become too easy to hide behind an internet alias.

SNAPCHAT  Talk to your kids about SnapChat!  This app is widely popular among teens for its twist.  Although it has message features similar to Facebook and fun editing tools like Instagram .. a snapchat message can only be viewed for seconds.  This is what falsely draws teens to using the app to send photos, messages etc…they send photos or messages thinking they will disappear in seconds therefore believing they will never be shared or discovered by a parent.  HOWEVER, if someone screenshots the photos or messages they will then live forever .. in the world wide web; waiting.

EXPERTS ESTIMATE THE MAJORITY OF PARENTS ARE UNAWARE THEIR CHILDREN ARE USING THESE (the following) APPS right under their noses !!

OMEGELE  Never heard of it right?  Neither had I until today.  This is an app which allows strangers to connect with kids and kids to connect with strangers in seconds .. strangers of any age and sex.  WTH?!  Did I read that right?!  WTH?!

KIK  I had never heard of this messaging app either!

internetsafety

The initials KYS .. I would never have guessed this internet slang meant KILL YOURSELF !!  I just don’t have the words when I think of what those 3 little initials mean to so many and how they can drive, push or just slightly nudge a child to suicide.  The good thing .. Justice may prevail.  Due to the high rate of suicide by victims of bullying (in any form) the term KYS can now be linked to messages/hate accounts and criminal charges can result.

This epidemic is WORLDWIDE!

What can we do?  One thing we did was to ensure we always knew our kids’ friends.  We had an open door policy with the kids AND their friends so they could and still can talk to us about anything.  It’s not absolute nor is it a cure however it’s a great start.

The better the communication, the better equipped we can be as parents.

We can talk openly to our kids

We can be understanding

We can listen

We can be open

We can pay attention

We can investigate
