From us to you, here are a few of our experiences and some of what we learned along the way 😉

When thinking about the basics of relocating, be sure to understand that no matter how much planning you do, everything will not go as planned.  No really, I’m serious.  A few years of planning, endless hours of research and still .. we weren’t prepared!

As most of you already know, in 2012 we sold our businesses and home in BC and hit the road for Tulum, Mexico in the Mayan Riviera where we were building a house and looking forward to what 15+ years of 18-20 hour days had earned us … it was time for early retirement.  So we thought 😉

Well, things didn’t quite happen that way .. but we can laugh about it now, mostly 🙂

Example 1: our first night on the road did not quite go as planned.  At all …

Example 2 : our first week in the jungle was not what we expected (or in our manuals) …

Example 3 : listening to other people can lead you astray …

EXPAT RULE #1 : Remember that you are a guest, be grateful they’ve allowed you to be there.

EXPAT RULE #2 : Make an effort to learn the language.  You don’t need to be fluent, but try 🙂

EXPAT RULE #3 : Learn the local laws.  Juuuuuuust in case 😉

Example 4 : dying in Mexico – this was NOT in the plan …

Example 5 : the lessons have been priceless …

Example 6 : I didn’t know that, did you? …

EXPAT RULE #4 : Learn, understand & accept what ‘a Mexican minute’ means.

EXPAT RULE #5 : Be patient!  You WILL acclimate, I promise 🙂

EXPAT RULE #6 : Remember rule #1.

All the research in the world still wouldn’t have prepared us for everything we encountered along the way .. but we wouldn’t change a moment because we have learned so much from each and every experience (and because we can laugh about it now, mostly)

Whether things go as planned or not, take the leap and whatever you do & wherever your adventures take you, go with a light heart and bring your sense of humour 😉

‘Til next time
